Industry Spotlight - 20 Questions with Jose Tribuzio, Founder and CEO, Systema Software
Jose is one of the quiet, super smart guys. The kind of guy you want on your Board of Directors because they see things you probably don't. He has a very interesting story. He was working in Buenos Aires and wanted to fulfill his dream of moving to the States. He asked Accenture about it, and a month later he was living in Atlanta. Wow! That takes guts and ambition. Here's Jose's interview. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

 

1. Where did you go to school and what did you study?

I graduated from CAECE University of Buenos Aires, Argentina with a degree in Computer Science.

 

2. What was your first job in your professional career?

My first job after getting my degree was as a consultant for Andersen Consulting in Buenos Aires.

 

3. Do you have a mentor, and if so who?

A couple of the partners at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) took me under their wing and taught me a lot about professional life.

 

4. How did you end up in the claims software industry?

After consulting for many years, both with Accenture and also as an independent consultant, I ended up working at Valley Oak Systems, as an implementation manager for their claims software.

 

5. What would you do if you didn’t work in the claims software industry?

My computer science training, background, and expertise are in big data and data science. I’d probably work in this area, whether for insurance or another industry. If I switched to something completely different, I’d go into biotech. There are a lot of exciting developments with stem cell research and liquid biopsy tests that are very interesting to me.

 

6. As the Founder, what was the impetus to start Systema Software?

When I entered the insurance industry, I saw a need for better web-based claim systems. The existing systems were too complicated and didn’t perform well. I thought the industry would benefit from a modern, more streamlined system that offered more automation and sophisticated capabilities.

 

7. Besides Systema Software, what other companies/organizations in the industry do you admire and why?

In the technology space, I admire companies like Tesla and Uber, where they’ve taken a problem and tried to address it by starting from scratch. They’re not trying to improve on something. They’ve redesigned and addressed issues from a completely new angle.

 

8. Tell us how Systema Software is doing and what you see in the next two to three years.

We’re doing well. We continue to grow, and we are continually innovating our flagship product, SIMS Claims. We recently introduced a new User Interface, which has been very well received by customers, prospects and analysts. We also recently incorporated Microsoft’s Power BI (Business Intelligence) to deliver even more capabilities around data mining and predictive analytics.

In the next two to three years we plan to build out our BI module, SIMS Insight. Above all, we want SIMS Insight to be an easy and useful tool for customers to look at their data and use it to impact results. We will also continue to make SIMS more configurable, allowing customers to tailor it to meet their unique needs.

 

9. What are the top two things that set your company apart from your competitors?

Definitely our people and our product set us apart, but I’d also add our attitude. We’re not afraid to play with new technologies, or to put new capabilities into production and see how they work.

 

10. If you had to boil Systema Software down to one sentence, what would it be?

Systema Software delivers the best claims system to the insurance market.

 

11. In just a few key words, describe the culture of Systema Software.

We support each other and work well as a team to make client implementations successful. As a result, we’ve never had a failed implementation.

 

12. What challenges do you see the claims industry facing in the next few years?

Insurance has a crazy amount of data. Information comes from traditional sources, such as claims, and new sources, such as social media. And data is also coming from emerging technologies, such as wearables, drones, and telematics. We need systems that can sort through this information – a lot of it won’t be applicable – to the data that is actionable and can truly impacts claims performance.

 

13. Tell us about a failure you’ve had, and what you learned from it.

One of the lessons I learned that might be of interest to other entrepreneurs is to “think big” from the beginning. When building a company, you don’t want to have a bare-bones operation – even if you’re just starting out. It worked out for us, but it was a lot of hours and a lot of stress. If you put the right team together from the start and let go of some responsibilities by delegating, you can create faster momentum for your company.

 

14. Tell us about a success you’ve had, and how it came about.

Something I’m proud of is making the move from Argentina to the U.S. I was with Anderson Consulting at the time, in their financial services group, so we were building systems for banks. I wanted to travel. So, I asked if there were any projects in the U.S. that would be a good fit. A month later, I was working for a big project in Atlanta. During my first business meeting, everyone started clapping. I had no idea what was going on. Later, I learned that one of the women had announced she was having a baby. I had to immerse myself more in the language so I watched a lot of movies and made a lot of new friends so I could practice my English. I had to learn quickly in order to communicate effectively in my role.

 

15. On a professional level, what factors motivate you on a daily basis?

Having a challenge motivates me. Coming to work at Systema, there’s always a new challenge – whether it’s a new client request, an issue to resolve or new technology to adopt. In the software industry, we don’t always know what’s coming next, but being able to think on your feet and come up with a strategy to deal with an issue is something I enjoy.

 

16. What is your favorite fiction book, and non-fiction book?

I usually read business books or biographies. One book I really enjoyed was Freakonomics. It discussed how to look at large amounts of data with economic tools to see patterns we don’t realize are there. It’s kind of the thing we do here at Systema Software, but applied to a different industry.

I’m also reading Expedition Whydah about Barry Clifford’s obsession over a sunken pirate ship he heard about as a little boy. He ended up finding that ship and has been excavating its treasures. It’s a fascinating account of someone who had a passionate belief and took a chance on it.   

 

17. What historical figure(s) do you look up to and why?

Historically, I admire risk takers. People like Howard Hughes, the aviator and entrepreneur. He went against conventional wisdom and tried to achieve something people thought was impossible—in terms of building and flying these large planes—and yet he got it done.

 

18. If you could hire any famous person to be the spokesperson for Systema Software, who would it be and why?

Morgan Freeman – he’s a great narrator. He’d give great demos.

 

19. Systema Software reached its 10-year anniversary in the claims software market. Tell me a little about reaching this milestone in the company’s history? 

It’s gratifying to look back on all we’ve accomplished. We continue to add more staff and new clients each year. The key to our success has been focus. We’ve focused solely on the claims market and on delivering the best, most advanced claims solution in SIMS. Over the years, we’ve celebrated several milestones in terms of product development, including the launch of our mobile app and cloud hosting. The launch of our new UI has been another exciting development.

 

20. Tell me a little about the User Interface for SIMS Claims. Why was that necessary? 

We live in a digital society. Consumers expect streamlined User Interfaces (UIs) for their solutions. Many leading technology companies like Microsoft and Google have refreshed their UIs to stay at the forefront of web-based applications. We’ve done the same with our claims software. With the new UI, our clients are able to leverage the same power and robust features of SIMS—but with a sleek new look and feel, and a more intuitive and efficient user experience. By updating our UI, we were also able to offer new features and benefits, such as browser compatibility, accelerated performance and the ability to run on tablets. 

 

Jose Tribuzio is the founder and CEO of Systema Software. He has more than 20 years of experience in the software industry. He began his career at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) working on diverse projects for the financial, telecom, and transportation industries with clients including Delta Airlines, Pacific Bell, and Banco Frances. Prior to founding Systema Software, he started a multi-national consulting company helping organizations such as Prudential California. Since 2001, Jose has focused solely on developing insurance software solutions, which provide a unique combination of value, flexibility, and functionality.

Jose has previously presented at the National Workers’ Compensation & Disability Conference, American Claims Event (ACE), ACORD Conference, Association of Government Risk Pools (AGRIP), and the California Association of Joint Powers Authorities (CAJPA). He has also written articles for Workers Compensation Magazine, Insurance Thought Leadership, and Public Risk.

I had the pleasure of working with Jose! I learned a lot from him! I worked with Jose when he was an implementation manager. I remember he had to deliver some pretty bad news to a client and he was so well respected they thanked him at the end of the meeting! So proud of your accomplishments.....
